The 79th US Colored Infantry
Surnames from the Soldiers Who Served
This list is placed here on the African-NativeAmerican page, because of the fact that many soldiers who served in the 79th US Colored Infantry were slaves from Indian Territory. The family historian is encouraged to look at all possible sources of information, and when one is researching Indian Territory history, the Civil War is a crucial chapter. There were many battles that involved black soldiers from the Civil War, and thus learning about the impact of the War in the nation where one's ancestors lived is essential.
Thus, Civil War records are just as important as the Freedman rolls, the rolls by blood, and the payment annuity rolls. These names reflect the names of many who served in this regiment that was originally designated as the 1st Kansas Colored. This unit has a very distinguished history, and any Freedman researcher should become familiar with the history of the 79th US Colored Infantry, the 83rd US Colored Infantry, the 1st & 2nd Kansas Colored, and the Indian Home Guards. To ignore these valuable records in one's family history is to blatantly ignore a vital chapter in American History, Oklahoma History, Indian Territory history and the family history.
Avoid thePitfall It is critical that the researcher avoid one of the more typical pitfalls of "Native American" research. Often one gets side-tracked into the "find the-Indian-no-matter-what" search, and one loses sight of the purpose of family history research. The purpose is to find one's ancestors no matter who and no matter what they were. The fact is, that there were many blacks in the Five "Civilized" Tribes. Many had Indian blood. Many did not. The same can be said for those who will find a slave owner who was also an ancestor. Some of the slave owners were white, who had married into the nations, and others were Indian.
To simply research for blood often takes the researcher down a dangerous path of neglecting vital family history. The genealogical search then becomes fragmented, and incomplete. Hopefully the quest for the entire story, will always be in focus. The "blood" will appear if it is there and if it was recorded. The story however, is still significant if it does not appear. To abandon the search because "Indian blood" is not listed, OR-----greater still to choose to ONLY research the ancestors with the Indian blood is a travesty in terms of ancestral research. It gives credence to the fallacy of "lesser" or "impure" blood of the African. This can be avoided by keeping the quest for true knowledge in the forefront of one's genealogy efforts.
However, blood is not the issue in genealogy. HISTORY is the issue. On the other hand, blood is an issue in politics-----as tribal enrollment will reveal, and 20th century politics from South Africa will reveal. Genealogy however, involves an objective search-----a methodical objective study of records from many sources -- geographical, historical, legal, educational, federal, and many more.
This list, therefore is being provided as a possible pointer for those looking for ancestors from Indian Territory. The soldiers from the 83rd US Colored Infantry, and from the Indian Home Guards will also be added. Not all of these soldiers and surnames were from Indian Territory. However, many of them were. To make use of this list one should research the records of the 79th, USCT.
