Cherokee Freedman Descendant
Challenges Estrangement of Freedmen from
The Five Civilized Tribes
Through the efforts of Oklahoma citizen, Marilyn K. Vann, the issues pertaining to the exclusion of the Freedmen is being addressed. Ms. Vann is bringing to the light of the state of Oklahoma and the nation the fact that the Freedmen have been excluded from the nation to which they were a part, adopted by the Treaty of 1866 and later discarded by the nations who chose to adopt the Jim Crow laws of the south when it was popular to do so in the early 20th century.
Ms Vann has recently exposed the case of the Freedmen in the Oklahoma Press, and has recently drafted a petition that descendants of Freedmen are urged to read, sign, collect signatures and return. For the wording of the petition she asks that Freedmen descendants (that number in the hundreds of thousands) and those who support equal treatment of all persons under the law, printing the petition, obtain signatures and return to her.
